This timeline begins during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s, when Brown was compelled to look more critically at its practices, policies and campus environment with respect to race and other areas of inclusion, often as a result of student activism. The University’s post-Civil Rights Era history reflects Brown community members’ decades-long activism and efforts to confront the enduring legacies of racial slavery and anti-Black racism on campus and beyond.
